Democracies require individuals and groups who peacefully work to promote and protect universal human rights, justice, democracy, and positive societal change, Malawi's Second Vice President Enoch Chihana has said.
He made the observation in the northern Malawi city of Mzuzu on Tuesday as part of the commemoration of Human Rights Day, which is celebrated globally on December 10.
Chihana explained that the administration of President Peter Mutharika is committed to creating an enabling environment where all Malawians can freely exercise their rights without fear of oppression or persecution.
“The government remains committed to fostering a peaceful and inclusive environment where human rights defenders can operate freely and contribute meaningfully to national development,” Chihana said.
Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) Executive Director Silvester Namiwa was among those who received special recognition.
He said the recognition has strengthened his resolve to continue advocating for human rights and democracy in Malawi.
