Lawmaker says communities should stand up against gender based violence

There is a need for solidarity in both physical and online communities to end gender-based violence, a Member of Parliament has said.
Chiradzulu Nyungwe legislator Mwayi Ndalama decried that the rise of online abuse and misinformation, including those targeting political leaders, was a matter of concern and retrogression.
“We should not just watch when some people spew abusive words against others on digital platforms. We should join hands in denouncing the abusers,” he said.
Ndalama vowed that he would fight all forms of gender-based violence in his constituency so that every member of the community lives with dignity.
Speaking at the same function on November 29 during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence at Nyungwe Primary School, Chiradzulu District Council's Chairperson, Alick Naphiyo, said people need to be aware that cyberbullying is an offence.
“Tarnishing the image and reputation of others using social media platforms and even conventional media is an offence. Those practicing cyberbullying ought to stop immediately or risk prosecution,” he said.
The event started with a big walk through the community and a vibrant pavilion whereby organizations that were present, including the Centre for Solutions Journalism, One Stop Centre, and the police, showcased information on GBV-related services.
