Sick inmates and women with infants are among the 134 prisoners freed following a Presidential Pardon promulgated on Malawi’s Independence Day on July 6.

A press statement issued on July 6, 2026, signed by Homeland Security Secretary Linda Pacharo Moyo, says the pardon was granted under Section 89 (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.

“Most of the beneficiaries of the Presidential Pardon are the elderly, female inmates accompanied by infants and the chronically ill,” explains the statement in part.

Malawi’s prison system holds almost 20,000 inmates where challenges including overcrowding, food shortages, diseases and limited medical access are common.
