United Kingdom ₤254 Million Package to Enhance Family Planning in Malawi and Beyond

Malawi's problem of unplanned pregnancies may become history, thanks to a ₤254 million package  from United Kingdom for developing nations. CLINTON MWANYOPA of Malawi News Agency writes

In a significant step toward improving reproductive health, Malawi is among the developing countries to receive a substantial boost from the United Kingdom. 

The UK has pledged a ₤254 million package aimed at expanding access to voluntary family planning services in several developing countries, including Malawi, support which is coming at a crucial time as the country fights to reduce unplanned pregnancies.

The funding will enable Malawi to increase the availability and accessibility of family planning resources, thereby,  empowering individuals and couples to make informed decisions about their reproductive lives.

The UK in Malawi announced the on October 2, 2026 through its official X handle saying the support could help avert 14 million unintended pregnancies and prevent more than 35,000 maternal deaths by 2028.

The funding will be delivered through the CHOICES Programme in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI).

According to the UK government, the programme will make voluntary family planning available to more than 15 million women annually and expand access to contraceptives including condoms, pills, implants, and coils.

The support will also expand access to life-saving medicines for mothers and newborns, including products aimed at improving the detection and treatment of severe bleeding after childbirth.

The UK government said CHOICES operates in more than 50 countries, including Malawi, and focuses on countries with high rates of maternal deaths and low levels of contraceptive use.

In the statement, the UK support is expected to contribute to greater access to family planning sand maternal health care, while helping women and girls make informed choices about pregnancy, education and their future.

The UK has not yet disclosed the specific amount  that will be allocated to Malawi from ₤254 million package.
