HUMAN RIGHTS

Despite the government respecting civil and political freedoms, some sections of society do face human rights abuses and challenges. Key issues include police brutality, discrimination against prisoners, refugees, women and girls. There is also widespread gender-based violence (GBV), corruption, and threats to media freedom and human rights defenders. We implement interventions that address general human rights issues in Malawi.

The human rights landscape in Malawi is a combo of good human rights gains, meshed with worst human rights abuses. The paradox is that while the country guarantees fundamental freedoms, outdated traditional practices continue to fuel human rights violations like grabbing of deceased estates, killings of persons with albinism and the elderly. On the political front, associates of ruling party politicians get away with human rights abuses and the police hardly prosecute them.
